Auld Goonsy is an old timer in the whisky industry and has a wealth of knowledge and experience having worked in the cooperage of bonded warehouses and also in distilleries throughout Scotland.
Known as a bit of a joker, he is here to provide his tales of the industry. Some stories that will make you laugh and maybe some that will surprise or shock you! Talking in his conventional Scottish dialect, there may be some of you that don’t quite understand everything he says, but we will try to translate where necessary!
He has called on many of his old friends, ex-distillery managers and whisky enthusiasts to reminisce about their times working with all things whisky. With his pals of old codgers, they have collectively selected special casks of whisky that they think is perfect to put in a bottle. That’s what is so special about a Single Cask. It is unique and not often offered out to the worldwide whisky drinkers from distilleries. Auld Goonsy and his team are able to choose casks from just about any distillery in Scotland, mature it further before offering it to you at an affordable price.
The main theme of the range is Single Cask bottlings where the panel of ‘auld yins’ select the cask and then have it bottled (we think they enjoy their job too much as they seem to sample too many casks before selecting the ‘special one’). Some casks will be bottled at Cask Strength, such as the amazing first release in 2020 of the Caol Ila 12 Year Old at a staggering 58.2% and limited to only 291 bottles. Others will be bottled at a strength that the panel feel is just right for that dram. The second release from Auld Goonsy was a very enjoyable Teaninich 12 Year Old, bottled at 50.0% ABV and limited to only 355 bottles.
The team are also using their expertise to choose various finishes to the whisky by re-racking the casks into other wood such as sherry or wine casks. These flavours will also bring more uniqueness to the single cask offerings.
Auld Goonsy is also known for some poems after a few drams so keep visiting our website and social platforms. We tried to get Auld Goonsy to post on his social media but he said he’d ‘rather leave that tae the young yins’.
From a real character, and with real stories, we bring to you a range of whiskies for you to enjoy whilst uncovering many stories that maybe you didn’t know actually existed!
